Tragic Loss: Honoring the Memories of Two Nigerian Students
The Association of Nigerian Scholarship Students in Russia is deeply saddened to share the heartbreaking news of the passing of two of our fellow students, Ugwu Ebubechukwu and Adewole Adegboyega Samuel. Their untimely deaths serve as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety, especially when it comes to water bodies.
Ugwu Ebubechukwu, a vibrant scholarship student of the preparatory faculty student at ITMO in Saint Petersburg, tragically lost his life on the 23rd of July 2023. As a dedicated scholarship student and ANSSIRITE, Ebube was cherished by his peers, and his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
On that fateful day, Ebube and his friends ventured to the beach for some leisure time. After engaging in a game of volleyball, they decided to cool off by wading into the water. Tragedy struck when Ebube, who was not a proficient swimmer, took a dive into the water. His friends watched helplessly as he began to struggle, and a valiant rescue effort by a kind-hearted Russian bystander ensued. Despite their efforts, Ebube’s body was not recovered until a professional diver arrived on the scene. The news of his passing has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the entire Nigerian student community in Russia.
In a separate incident, we also mourn the loss of Adewole Adegboyega Samuel, another bright young preparatory faculty private student at People’s Friendship University of Russia, whose life was cut short tragically. Samuel’s story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with water bodies, especially for those who are not strong swimmers.
Samuel and his friends embarked on an outing where a seemingly innocent adventure turned into a devastating event. While enjoying the company of friends and later at a friend’s apartment, the group decided to escape the heat by visiting a nearby river. Samuel was informed that if the water level reached his chest, he should leave the river. Tragically, two of his friends entered the water – one a proficient swimmer, the other not as skilled. Samuel’s less-experienced friend decided to exit the river, only to realize Samuel was missing. Efforts to save Samuel were in vain, and he was pronounced dead after being transported to the ICU.
A Call for Caution: Safety Around Water Bodies
These heart-wrenching incidents underscore the need for caution and awareness when it comes to water bodies. As students, it’s essential to prioritize safety and make informed decisions, especially when engaging in activities near rivers, beaches, or other water sources. We strongly urge all Nigerian students in Russia, scholarship or not, and students everywhere, to adhere to the following safety guidelines:
- Know Your Limits: If you’re not a confident swimmer, avoid entering deep waters or bodies of water with strong currents.
- Buddy System: Always go with friends who are experienced swimmers and prioritize each other’s safety.
- Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with the water’s conditions and potential hazards before entering.
- Observe Warnings: Heed signs, warnings, and advice from locals or authorities regarding water safety.
- Emergency Preparedness: Be aware of emergency procedures and have a plan in case of unforeseen circumstances.
- Respect Nature: While water can be enticing, respect its power and never underestimate its potential risks.
The Association of Nigerian Scholarship Students in Russia grieves the loss of Ugwu Ebubechukwu and Adewole Adegboyega Samuel, and our thoughts go out to their families, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Let us honor their memories by promoting safety and encouraging responsible behavior around water bodies. May their souls rest in peace.
Remember, life is precious, and your safety should always be a top priority.
